Speed Chess Decides Winner of Five-Way Tie
Although EAGLE Chess Academy’s second tournament wasn’t as heavily attended as the first, it still proved to be as exciting as ever. On Saturday, September 8, 2007 the fourth and final round ended in a 5-way tie. However, a few rounds of speed chess quickly determined the tournament winners. Many young chess players were in attendance and two proved to be great contenders.
EAGLE Chess Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that hosts monthly non-USCF chess tournaments. The tournaments are opened to adults and children of all ages.
The tournament was held at D’Light Skate N Palace, 3132 Branch Ave in Temple Hills, MD. The All-You-Can-Eat buffet, catered by Monteik’s Catering and Event Planning, was enjoyed by all.
Winners
1st Place: Sharif Usenov (15 yrs) with a $300 Award
2nd Place: Talisa Jackson with a $200 Award
3rd Place: Charles Yang (12 yrs) with a $100 Award
Additionally, the five winners of a free entry into the next tournament listed alphabetically are Ronald Best (9 yrs), Derrick Carter, James Fabunmi, Gabriel Vilarrubi (15 yrs), and Anthony Walker.
Chess instructor, Ted Fagan, founded EAGLE Chess Academy to provide scholastically based chess learning programs in a supportive, relaxed environment for young chess players. Check out a Prince George’s County library for a chess program near you.

EAGLE Chess Academy Hosts Its First Chess Tournament
The organization is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, established to promote and teach the game of chess, passing on educational, recreational, and social benefits to scholastic aged children in the MD/DC metropolitan area. Their primary educational objective for teaching chess to children is to help improve their ability to think effectively. The tournament was held at D’Light Skate N Palace, 3132 Branch Ave in Temple Hills, MD.
Winners
1st Place: Theodore Jones with a $300 Award
2nd Place: David Paulina with a $200 Award
3rd Place: Zack Kinney with a $100 Award
Additionally, Gabriel Vilarrubi, James Fabunmi, Reggie Pearson, and Herman Barber won entry fees into their next tournament.
Special thanks to the co-sponsor, Tim Taylor, owner and operator of D’Light Skate N Palace, who also believes in the importance of children and education. That combined with his love for chess made him decide to offer space in his facility for monthly Open and Scholastic tournaments that will broaden young people’s exposure to chess. Founded in 2004 by Ted Fagan, EAGLE Chess Academy currently is the largest organization promoting and providing chess instruction in Prince George’s County and one of the largest in the State of Maryland, having impacted thousands of youth and their families.

EAGLE Chess Academy hosted its first monthly tournament to over thirty participants and spectators this past Sunday, July 29, 2007. It consisted of four rounds of 30 minute games, opened to adults and children of all ages. Attendees ranged in age from 5yrs. old and up. Among the many attendees was Senator Ulysses Curry who supports EAGLE Chess Academy and chess throughout Maryland to the extent that he was instrumental in getting $255,000 placed into the Maryland state budget for chess.
