Queens Reign at this Royal Event
On Saturday, July 5, 2008, EAGLE Chess Academy hosted it’s first female only chess tournament at the Upper Marlboro Public Library. Although there was a small turn out, it accomplished the goal of providing an opportunity for women and girls to compete in a more relaxed enviroment. Small cash prizes and plaques were award to the top three winners.
Winners
1st Place: Katrina Thompson
2nd Place: JorDanna Frazier
3rd Place: Jasmine Frazier
Ted Fagan, founder and Executive Director of EAGLE Chess Academy, decided to host this event in an effort to draw more females to chess because he believes females, even though many possess the skills for high level play, shy away from open tournaments for various reasons. Their numbers are relatively low compared to their male counterparts. This event and ones to follow will hopefully raise those numbers, at least in the Prince George’s County area.
Be on the look out for our next scholastic tournament for both boys and girls during the coming school year. But until then, make a point to attend one of our eight library chess clubs so you too can Enjoy A Great Learning Experience.
