Executive Director’s Column – June 2009

Greetings everyone. This is our second newsletter and, unfortunately, one of the first things I have to tell you is that we are not going to have the scholastic tournament this month. I would like to say that it is because of the Juneteenth celebration to be held at Watkins Glen Park on June 20th. However, the real reason is that I could not do all of the things that need to be done to make it the kind of success that I want it to be. Therefore, we will have the Scholastic Tournament next school year. Now for the good news: on July 18th, we are going to have a tournament just for ladies of all ages at the Upper Marlboro Library located at 14730 Main Street, Upper Marlboro, MD.

For the last several years, we have been discussing the impact of having top basketball players talk about the fact that they play chess and how it would encourage young people to want to play chess. Imagine my absolute delight to see on national televesion a basketball ad featuring chess—Kobe Bryant was sitting across a chess board from LeBron James. It is worth watching. You can find it on YouTube under NBAChess. The video runs a little over 2 minutes.

EAGLE Chess Academy is interested in having a facility of its own. Having our own place would allow us to have a first-class chess club with space to conduct a range of chess-based learning and mentoring programs. Any ideas, thoughts or assistance in meeting this goal will be greatly appreciated.
